A MESSAGE FROM OUR THIRD PRESIDENT

“Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that His justice cannot sleep for ever…”

Thomas Jefferson was perhaps the most influential Founding Father of them all, and the father of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment and the continuing separation of church and state, a concept that is vital in America, one that insures our continued freedom of religion.

Yes. Thomas Jefferson did not want the government to interfere with churches.

And he also did not want relgion breaching the wall of separation between church and state. He was a brilliant man, and if he intended that religion could be mingled with government(what fundementalists claim) he would have plainly stated this in either the Declaration of Constitution.

Have you discoursed with Thomas Jefferson. You write as though his contemporary though I rather doubt it.

I never spoke to him personally, but I do know he owned many slaves, and even fathered children with at least one of them. I’m still trying to understand how fundamentalists reconcile that fact with their repressive religious agendas. Perhaps the same way you ignore Glen Becks’ history with the Mormon Church?
At any rate, Thomas Jefferson my favorite Founding Father.

Shall I infer from your listing of some of the sins committed by Thomas Jefferson that you are judging him? Thomas Jefferson was a man, He sinned and made mistakes as you and I do. As a Christian I do not need to reconcile his sins or actions or inactions. That was between Mr. Jefferson and God. By what authority do you judge my Christian conservative beliefs as regressive…………..oh, I forgot you are omniscient. A thousand pardons oh great one.
