Daugaard Angry About Phone Calls

Governor Dennis Daugaard doesn’t like the phone calls being made to South Dakota voters. He says those responsible for making them are cowards.

Now he has asked Attorney General Jackley to investigate!

This is what he said: “The people who are sponsoring these calls are cowards. They are hiding their identities behind shadowy out-of-state organizations and unlisted phone numbers.
In our election system, anyone can voice an opinion – but the public has a right to know who is paying for it. That’s why I have asked the attorney general to investigate these calls.”

Before you draw any conclusions about cowardice, and who should be investigating who… consider some of the other facts.

State Representative Stace Nelson believes that the Governor himself may have sponsored similar calls.

In an email to Attorney General Jackley, Nelson says, ” I respectfully request the same standards be applied to the governor and others regardless of their political standing. Please accept this email be my official complaint and request for your office to investigate the governor for appearing to be in gross noncompliance of this same statute SDCL 12-27-16 § (2) which he appears to have violated repeatedly when he admittedly (see attached) conducted numerous polling calls citing candidates and public officials within the 60 day period before the 2012 June primary, from a telephone number that was inoperative, and without advising those called who the calls were coming from. I would also ask that your office investigate him for failing to comply with other SD campaign finance laws in his refusal to declare the numerous expensive in-kind contributions to candidates that he provided expensive polling data to (see attached email chain). Along that line, there is currently similar polling telephone calls, that are occurring across SD, that cite elected officials, candidates, without identification who is paying for them, within 60 days of the election, and which are equally in full noncompliance with this statute.”

So, if the Governor sponsored these kind of calls, isn’t that like the pot calling the kettle black?  Will Jackley investigate the Governors activities or just the political opponents of the Governor?  This could not only be telling about our Governor, but also our Attorney General.

On a side note… there is a debate in Sioux Falls on Monday evening about Obama Care in South Dakota. The Governor was invited to come and defend his efforts to impose Obama Care on the taxpayers of our state. I am told there will be an “empty chair”, since he isn’t coming and has declined to send a spokesman. Not exactly an act of bravery… If the Governor is really concerned about “half-truths”, then one would think he would jump at the chance to explain why he has a full-time, taxpayer-funded staff working on South Dakota’s very own health care exchange.

His name calling sounds alarmingly similar to that of our current President.
