God Grant Me The Serenity

It is widely accepted that Reinhold Niebuhr, a Protestant Theologian wrote the serenity prayer.  Regardless of who wrote it this simple prayer has been widely used by many.  It has become the “motto”, if you will of the AA addiction recovery program.

I heard it used recently by a friend to defend what I call the art of political expediency; that is the compromise of something which is clearly right, as part of a strategy to engineer a “good” result.

The specific topic under discussion was the vote in the US House to approve a continuing resolution to fund government, rather than seize the moment to include a provision in the CR that would have allowed NO funding for ObamaCare.  ObamaCare, as most Americans know, takes religious liberties and funds abortion.

I believe it is a misappropriation of the serenity prayer to infer that we should “accept” evil if we believe doing so will produce a good outcome.   The Catholic Church doctrine states this ever-so clearly, “One may never do evil so that good may result from it”.

A much used quote reminds us that “Duty is ours.  Results belong to God.”  Those who participate in this chess game of political expediency would do well to reflect on that for a season.

The serenity prayer speaks to the issue of “personal control” vs allowing God to be in control.  Using it to suggest we must accept political evil in hopes of some better outcome is a serious misuse of this wonderful prayer.  In fact, using it to justify political expediency invalidates the prayer by placing man in the position of control, rather than God. That is the fundamental problem in America, and the world.

Man is NOT God, and should not try to assume that role.
