South Dakota House Passes Big Tax Increase

Maybe it’s not big by government standards, but a $3.2 Million dollar tax increase is still a lot of money in South Dakota.

Friday afternoon the South Dakota House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to permanently extend the “tourism tax” (HB 1066).  The original tax was sold as a “temporary” tax.  Yeah, right!  That was step one.  Now we proceed to step two.  Making it permanent.

This bill is supported by Republican leadership and the governors office, and will not be described as a tax increase.  Representatives Stace Nelson, Jenna Haggar, Elizabeth May and Dan Kaiser were the four Legislators who stood strong and voted no on this tax increase.  South Dakota taxpayers should thank them for trying to hold the line on tax increases.

We will very likely hear the Republican leadership boasting again, as they did last year, that they “balanced the budget without raising our taxes”.  It wasn’t true then and it won’t be true now.

A Million Dollars here… a Million Dollars there… pretty soon you’re talking about real money!
