Larry Pressler, Big Tent Republican

This Former South Dakota Republican Senator voted for Barack Obama.

That should really tell us all we need to know, but Pressler just gave us another dose of his brand of “Republicanism”.

Pressler said, “Much to my own surprise, I found myself recently signing an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court advocating gay marriage.”  He went on to say that he “used to” support traditional marriage, but he has changed his position because he has been “doing a lot of volunteer work with veterans the past few years.”  Thankfully, he spared us the details regarding the nature of his volunteer work.

So why is this public proclamation even significant?

Probably because it is not all that unusual these days for Republicans to reject their own party platform and principles.  Many Republicans look as more like Democrats than Republicans.

The political world has changed, and most people have not been watching.  The Democrat Party has continued to move left since the days of John F. Kennedy.  The Republican party is actually to the left of a “Kennedy Democrat” on many issues.  Conservative Republicans have been left holding the charred remains of what once was their party platform.  Left-leaning Republicans like Pressler continue to burn the pages, while party leaders simply follow their lead, because they “deserve our respect”.

It makes me wonder if perhaps Senator Pressler is positioning himself to enter the race for the Tim Johnson seat.

That would give us two “big tent” Republicans in that race.

The only way that Republicans are ever going to win anything nationally, and increasingly locally, is to be more inclusive. We’ve closed our doors to nearly all independents and voters. I don’t think you’ve noticed, but independents are not flocking to their county auditors to change their registration.

We could nominate someone like Napoli or Nelson and lose by 5-10 pts in 2014 or we could do the right thing for the future of this state and county and win by 5-10 points.

“Big Tent Republican” = Sellout Republican. These cloaked liberals are nothing but sellouts–sellouts of their party’s documented values, sellouts of their party, sellouts of the people who elected them, and sellouts of the values that made America the greatest nation on earth.
