Is Proposed Merger of US and Canada Good for Conservatives?

canadamap1Futurist Daniel Greenfield sees a return to an empire-ordered world across the globe.  Perhaps there will be “A Unified Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok” as Kim Zigfeld suggests.  Maybe China will “own” the whole Far East–or the US the entire Western Hemisphere.  Canadian Diane Francis’ new book Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country diane francisis a kindred step toward global re-massing.

The book has been getting lots of attention now that Vladimir Putin is being accused of wanting to rebuild the old Soviet empire.  And then some, perhaps with an eye on merging with the now socialized countries of the European Union.  There’s something to be said for the neighborly security that goes with contiguous countries.

Ask yourself if the Genghis Khan’s conquests of China, Arabia, and much more of the civilized world didn’t bring peace to all under his rule.  Like it or not, the British Empire beneficially prepared woebegone has-been countries for the modern world.

Diane Francis is a fiscal conservative who looks mostly at the economic advantages to both country.  But some on the US right see the value of Canada in non-progressive terms.  For them, it’s not about money, but about Canada’s quieter, more traditional ambience.  Sure, liberals in Canada are also running at high tide these days, amok if you will, but not as bad as in the US.  Our northern neighbor still conjures up hoped-for vestiges of what the US used to be when values and religion and heritage counted for everything.

Those on the far right would probably agree with John Steinbeck and George Orwell about how big government–that is, empires–become oppressive once established.  If nothing else, those on the right who are routed from all ancestral homes can at least take to the wilderness zones of northern Canada to bide their lives.
