The Curse Of A Nation

Debt

Great  leaders in America understood the danger of debt, and what it could do to destroy the nation.

“I go on the principle that a Public Debt is a Public curse and in a Republican Government a greater than in any other.”  James Madison

“I place economy among the first and most important of virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared.” Thomas Jefferson

“Let every man, every corporation, and especially let every village, town, and city, every county and State, get out of debt and keep out of debt. It is the debtor that is ruined by hard times.”   Rutherford B. Hayes

“Think what you do when you run in debt; you give to another power over your liberty.” Benjamin Franklin

“A government which lays taxes on the people not required by urgent public necessity and sound public policy is not a protector of liberty, but an instrument of tyranny.”   Calvin Coolidge

“To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.”
Thomas Jefferson

“We don’t have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven’t taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much.”  Ronald Reagan

“The power to tax involves the power to destroy.”  John Marshall  House Member, Secretary of State  and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.”   Thomas Jefferson

Great advice.  If only the leaders of today would follow it.
