Is God Mad?

Should we dismiss the prospect of the “judgment of God”?

hail

Grapefruit sized hail battered parts of Western South Dakota.  Wind storms have taken grain bins and buildings.  Tornados and flash floods have caused significant damage.

Does it make you wonder what is going on?

The God I know and serve is a loving God.  He also has a history of dealing harshly with those who refuse His love and reject His principles.  If you don’t think so, you should re-read the Bible.  Both the Old Testament and the New have documentation of the wrath of God.

At the very least, it wouldn’t hurt for us to look around and examine the way we live.

This morning, I noticed a beautiful picture of Mount Rushmore.  Right next to it was a picture of Crazy Horse.

It struck me as interesting that we have significant monuments in South Dakota honoring men. Can you name one honoring God?  Don’t think I am bashing these beautiful tributes to important men.  I am just wondering if it should tell us something about our priorities.

The Bible seems to describe our society today in 2 Timothy.

2 Timothy 3 King James Version (KJV)

3 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.

What do you think, is God happy with the way we are living?

If you want to frighten yourself and others, you can find ways to do it. If you want to comfort others, you can also find ways to do it, but sometimes that seems more difficult.

I’d worry less about monuments and statues and more about doing good works for our fellow humans, as a way of paying tribute. If the system works as advertised, the good works would be all the memorializing required. If doing good doesn’t work, no monument will fix that.
