Stand For Something

 What will you NOT tolerate?

If America is destined to survive, people must be willing to resist assaults on freedom and principle even at their own peril.  We have come to this place in history because most people have chosen to turn their head away from injustice and wickedness rather than resist it.

Unprincipled leadership is a reflection of an unprincipled people.

People and organizations who CLAIM to be principle based quickly abandon their “principles”Daane for fear of losing an election.  What they fail to see is that winning an election by supporting an unprincipled candidate is actually LOSING.

In a recent election I had conversations with political and religious leaders who disparaged the leading candidate.  They clearly knew that he did not represent the values and principles they CLAIM to hold.  Still, they openly supported him and worked hard to elect him because they determined that WINNING the election was more important than standing for their values.  Benjamin Franklin said,

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

I would suggest that those who are willing to give up their principles and values to support a “wining” candidate deserve to lose.  History demonstrates that they do lose.

These “winning” candidates who have not demonstrated through their record that they support moral principles and conservative values will certainly not change AFTER the election.  Supporting compromising candidates is like marrying someone in hopes they will change after the ceremony.  Things get WORSE, not better.

The media is giving us a daily dose of polling data to show us who can “win” the Republican nomination for President, and then go on to “win” the White House.  Winning is everything.

One of the most memorable comments I have heard recently came from a man who passionately quotes the Founding Fathers and verses from the Bible.  He said, “I am willing to lose my LIFE for freedom.”  On the face, that sounds like a valiant commitment.  This man who fervently makes this claim is NOT, however, willing to lose an election.  Not even when it means supporting a candidate with a record of compromising conservative principle and moral values.  How believable is it to be willing to lose your life if you are not willing to risk losing an election?  The reason we have fallen so far is because we have not been willing to stand firmly for our principles and values.  In the process of “winning” we have lost and are losing them both.  Giving lip service to conservative principles and moral values is worth NOTHING if we sacrifice them in order to “win”.

Isn’t it past time to STAND for something?

Indeed it IS time to stand for something! For too long, we’ve hoped and prayed evil would give us a break, would change, would somehow not be so bad.

I’m reminded of the joke about the man in his house as the flood waters rose and someone came by to offer him a ride out of the area. No, he said, the Lord will protect me. Later on, as the waters rose, someone came by in a boat and offered him a ride; “No, the Lord will protect me.” Still later, when the waters were so high that he was on the roof, a helicopter came by to lift him to safety, but he just said, “No thanks, the Lord will protect me.” Then, when he was in Heaven a little later, he asked the Lord why he hadn’t protected him. The Lord replied, “Good grief, I sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter–what more did you want!?”

God gave us a Declaration of Independence which documented from whence this nation’s principles of freedom originate. God gave this nation a constitution which establishes clear boundaries and limits on government, and articulates specific God-given liberties that our government has a duty to protect. God gave this nation free speech, freedom of assembly, the protected right to hold our elected officials accountable, and a legal framework for dealing with those who violate that trust.

Yet here we, the Christian community stands, drowning.
