That is only the beginning.

According to the AP, 46,000 wild horses and burros are in government “holding facilities”.  BLM Director, Neil Kornze says his experts estimate that it will cost a cool one Billion dollars to care for them over their lifetime.  He says the cost is about $50,000.00 for each horse.  My calculator says $50,000.00 X 46,000 horses = $2,300,000,000.00… but I digress.  Estimates say there are nearly an additional 70,000 wild horses roaming public lands.  The one Billion dollars doesn’t include any funds for those animals.

There are at least two problems to consider:  If they estimate 70,000 still roaming, there are probably over 100,000, and the numbers are growing every year.

While BLM is horrible-izing over how to deal with this problem, they are considering “sterilizing” as one solution.  There is a better solution.  Determine a realistic number of wild horses to be left and allow a private wrangler to capture and take ownership of excess horses.  Problem solved.  Unfortunately, government doesn’t like private sector solutions.

Several years ago, I made an offer to solve a similar problem in Rapid City, South Dakota.  The city has a problem of overpopulation of deer, and pays tens of thousands of dollars to exterminate deer each year.  I offered to live-trap the number of deer the city wanted to remove at NO COST to the city.  The deer would have been relocated to a private preserve.  That solution was a non-starter.  Local, State and Federal government does not want private, money saving, government shrinking solutions.

As long as you foot the bill, the BLM will “manage” the horses.
