The Power Of Compromise

Compromise is a powerful thing.

So is sin.

A little of it goes a long way.  You have, no doubt, heard that one bad apple spoils the bunch.  Jesus said, ” a little leaven leavens the whole lump.”

It has been sad to see the decline of principles in Republican leaders.  A once-strong party has now become the party of compromise.  Thankfully, there are still SOME committed conservatives in the party, but it is hard to argue that they are not in the minority.

I have seen some close friends transformed from their commitment to principle to little more than party hacks.  Understand, they still profess conservative commitment, but are in the tank for elected Republicans who have abandoned the party platform.  I’ve reached the conclusion that these are not bad people.  They have just been associating with compromise long enough that it has now infected their thinking.

The definition of compromise is, “an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions”.  That is where the problem begins.  Compromise on gun control, spending, tax increases, regulations, protection of unborn children… the list is long.

The Republican party has become the party of compromise.  You might wonder why I would make such a statement.  In early American history there was a cry for “No King but King Jesus”.  Now, it seems America wants “Anything BUT the King”.  And so, we get what we ultimately want.  Or more correctly, we get only what we are willing to sacrifice and fight for.  It is soooooo easy to compromise rather than stand up for what is right and be willing to suffer the consequences.

There is no “easier, softer” way.  The preservation of our freedom will only come from a people who are willing to stand with Patrick Henry and say, “Give me liberty or give me death”.  I would suggest a version of that commitment should say, “I will stand for what is right, and endure the consequences if I lose the battle”.  Truth is, we will suffer the consequences whether we compromise or lose the fight.  Our only hope is to remain totally committed to what is right.

When we compromise we have already lost.
