The Pretense Of Understanding

Political leaders may not know as much as you think they know.

During my service in the South Dakota State House and Senate I saw first-hand, the political inclination of some to serve themselves rather than the citizenry.  The thirst for power holds a tight grip on the motivations of many.  To them, political “appearance” is all important.

It might surprise you to learn that they have less comprehension of some issues than you do.  That isn’t the impression they project.  They would like you to view them as experts on all the issues, when in fact, they either don’t know the subject matter or have a wrong understanding of the issue altogether.  Ronald Reagan approached the issue when he said, “The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”  What he DIDN”T address was the reality that his assertion was also true of many of our Conservative friends.

Daniel Webster understood that appearance in politics is part of the game.

“The world is governed more by appearance than realities so that it is fully as necessary to seem to know something as to know it.”

Beware:

What you SEE might not be what you GET.
