Legalized Pot Has A New Adversary

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

He is now “The Man” in charge of the Justice Department, and he isn’t a friend of legalized marijuana.

Over twenty states have legalized some form of marijuana.  From recreational, anything goes use to medical use, all of the state legalization flies in the face of Federal law.

Sessions has not been a fan, to say the least.  At one point, Sessions promoted the idea that drug traffickers should be subjected to the death penalty.  He has opposed legalization of marijuana and reduced drug sentences.  When questioned during his confirmation hearings, Sessions said Congress should “pass a law that changes the rules” if it wants to decriminalize marijuana.

Sales of “legal” pot is a multi Billion dollar business.  Nearly three dozen companies are currently publicly traded.  State Governments are highly invested in the business too.  Colorado collects about $ 150 Million dollars a year in sales tax from the pot industry sales.

During the campaign President Trump indicated that he would leave legalization issues to the states.  That position may “evolve” with Sessions in charge at the Justice Department.  Sessions will likely be more concerned about enforcing the law than he is in pleasing the president.

It might take a while for Sessions to get his feet on the ground, but the legalized pot industry is bracing for a fight.  As we wait and watch, the industry might do well to consider the old saying…

… “Smoke ’em if you got ’em.”
