Theological Problems With “The Shack’

First the book, now the movie.

I didn’t read the book, but my wife did. She read portions of it to me as well. It was intriguing and thought provoking.

When I had the opportunity to see the movie, I was anxious to see it, in spite of some of the criticism. I went to the movie the same way I approached the book, and found it to be a very inspirational presentation. It didn’t diminish my understanding of God, but left me wanting to know Him even better.

Without getting “deep”, I would simply suggest that this movie gave a perspective on God… the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that was refreshing. It will provide a pathway to healing for many hurting people. I think that would be pleasing to God.

I won’t be debating the theological premise with anyone. If you think it sacrilegious or somehow unholy it’s alright with me. I would just say the movie was well worth my time. I’m glad I went. I might also go with some other people who could be healed and inspired by experiencing this compelling story.

This movie gets two thumbs up from me.

Thanks Gordon, Facebook has been full of the heresy accusations and it’s refreshing to hear a balanced view. Nine years ago my family had the opportunity to meet the author and his two collaborators. We listened to their stories and how the Shack came to be. They laid out a very compelling background for everything controversial. BTW, Paul Young originally wrote the book for his children and chose a black female Papa because during an extreme crisis in his family, when their entire community turned against them, a black lady was the only one who showed God’s love to them. To his children, they recognized immediately Papa as that lady. For me, the book was worth five simple words “I’m especially fond of you!”

I’m so happy to read your review. I read the book years ago after my brother passed away suddenly. It eased my pain somewhat and made me long for a more personal relationship with Christ. I actually checked it out from our church library. When I asked my preacher what he thought of the controversy over the book, he pointed to the classification on the back and said “it’s fiction” and it has started many conversations about God. I can’t wait to see the movie!

Thanks Gordon. This movie theatre owner is careful about what we show and my feelings line up with yours.
It isn’t the Bible. It’s an allegory, and a good one IMO.
