An Old Friend Makes It Through The Night

Tonto has been a faithful steed.

He is in his twenties, which is not exactly a youngster for a horse.  Both my wife and son refer to him as “my horse”.  He is actually MY horse… really.  Late yesterday he began having some obvious pain and discomfort.  The best diagnosis we could determine was that he was suffering from Colic.

He was getting progressively worse into the evening, and by 9:00 we were concerned that he might not recover.  A trip to the local vet, along with numerous phone consultations brought home a good dose of banamine.

Within minutes of administering the does, he got some relief.  Still, he was not doing well overall.  At about 11:30 I left him, having done what we could to help him. There was really nothing left to do but pray.  We did.

This morning, he is standing on a hill in the pasture.  I haven’t been out to check on him up close, but the fact that he is upright rather than laying down is a VERY good thing.  It’s good to know he has worked his way through the pain and discomfort.

I don’t know who is more thankful, him or me.

UPDATE:  After rebounding and seeming to be on the road to recovery for several days, Tonto died.  I think it was just too much for him to overcome at his age.  He was a very special animal.  As I remember him, I don’t recall a time when he ever said “no”.  He was completely willing and faithful in every imaginable way.  My successful archery elk hunt with Tonto will always be a special memory.  There won’t be a “replacement”.
