Huron police chief put on leave after testifying in SD Legislature

By Ed Randazzo

Huron city officials have put Huron Police Chief Doug Schmitt on administrative leave after having testified on a bill in the SD State Senate. The bill, SB156, would have imposed penalties on employers for hiring illegal immigrants.

Schmitt had testified that he thought two businesses in the Huron area were employing illegal immigrants. Huron Mayor Dave McGirr, in a radio interview, said that the city will investigate Schmitt’s testimony and “take any action that is deemed appropriate.”

Why is Police Chief Schmitt being investigated for telling the truth?

Perhaps the investigation should be of the city officials. What are they afraid of?
