Addiction: Is There A Way Out?

Yes.

Unfortunately, not everyone finds it.

Addiction to alcohol and drugs is a problem that is getting worse, not better.  The courts are jammed with cases, most of which have some connection to drugs or alcohol.  Everyone knows someone who has been impacted by addiction.

I have lost two dear friends as a direct result of addiction to drugs and alcohol.  Many of the people I love either are or have been adversely impacted.  Some continue a lifestyle controlled by their addiction, causing great damage to themselves, family and friends.

It is a plague on our nation.  I have made the personal choice to be drug and alcohol free.  I’ve seen enough that I don’t want any part of it.  Not a sip.  Not a hit.

The way out is simple.  Stop using.  Simple to say, difficult to do.  By its very nature, addiction compels the victim to continue on a path of personal destruction.  While they provide help for some, treatment programs are largely ineffective.  One method that shows promise is a medical solution that helps “re-program” the brain of the addict.  It requires a monthly injection, and it isn’t cheap.  Not cheap, but probably much less costly than continued addiction.

The one “way out” that actually works is Divine deliverance.

When an addict is able to make a connection with God, his/her likelihood of recovery increases exponentially.  Unfortunately, some addicts who develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ are still unable to shake the demon of addiction.  And, make no mistake about it.  It is a demon.  Such was the case with both of my friends who lost their battle.  I don’t fault God and I don’t question their genuine commitment of faith.  My understanding of situations like theirs won’t be complete until my feet touch the streets of Heaven.  Of one thing, I am certain.  God can, will and does deliver people from the bondage of addiction.  Our job is to pray, believe and trust.  The rest is out of our hands.

The addict needs to make his/her way to a personal commitment to Christ, who provides a new life for those who come.

It is, indeed, the best “way out”.
