White and Red Longhorn Cows

Some people turn up their nose.

In a world where “color sells”, Longhorn breeders can miss incredible opportunities by passing up solid red and solid white Longhorn cows.

In the past year, I have added only two new “outside cows” to my herd.  One is solid red. The other is a white cow.  I consider both of them to be excellent additions, and both were real bargains in my opinion.  I already have a few solid red or white cows.  I like the ones I have.  It is pretty easy to get flashy calves by using the right bull.

Our current herd sire, Top Hand is a flashy black and white bull that blends Top Caliber and WS Jamakism genetics.  He would be in upper 80’s TTT if he hadn’t tipped his horns.  When used on solid color cows, he can throw very colorful calves.  I am very anxious to use him on my new white cow.

One of my favorite 2017 Top Hand bull calves comes from a solid red cow.  His horn and conformation are excellent, but the best part is his color.  He is developing into an absolutely striking brindle.  I have also had great results from my red cows by using a son of Drag Iron.

Don’t be too quick to discount or dispose of your white or red Longhorn cows until you see what kind of color they can produce.  They might surprise you!  If you decide you don’t want them any more, please give me a call.  I am not afraid of them!!

If you have had success producing color with red or white Longhorn cows, maybe you can share some pictures.  It might help someone decide to keep (or buy) a “plain” looking cow!
