1960s Were a Cultural Nuclear Bomb

This 1960 photo of JFK and McGovern in Sioux Falls reveals one of the last periods in political America when both parties seemed to be okay to the average citizen. Both men loomed as World War II heroes. The church stood tall over the city. Patriots were out in front in public celebrations. The Cold War galvanized a sense of unity.

But darker winds from the 1950s were blowing in the wind. The Beat Generation found that colleges could easily be captured to stage revolutionary social change in the minds of impressionable youth.   Emerging television came just in time to break down the moral front doors of families with novelty and entertainment. The 1960s were a cultural nuclear bomb dropped on an innocent and unsuspecting country.
