A lesson to be learned from a local political race

Yesterday Rapid City voters turned out to the polls for a runoff election for mayor. Sam Kooiker, a long time city alderman was successful in ousting the incumbent.

Congratulations, Sam.

The lesson to be learned: People complain about negative campaigning, but it works.

After trailing in the field of 4 candidates for mayor, the incumbent went completely negative in his runoff campaign. Supported by the deep pockets of local moguls and the “good old boys” cabal, the incumbent was able to close the gap significantly by bombarding the locals with a totally negative, truth-bending radio spot that ran seemingly non-stop.

So the next time you hear someone rail against negative campaigning and asking why it was employed, you will know the answer.
