Thune Defends the Budget Control Act of 2011

In response to an email I sent to his office, Senator John Thune (R-SD) sent me a snail mail letter which defends his vote in favor of the Budget Control Act of 2011.

You will recall that the Budget Control Act of 2011 was the result of the protracted debate and frenetic negotiations among the House and Senate leadership and President Obama surrounding the debt ceiling and budget cuts. It was passed in a “New York minute” by both the House and Senate with little opportunity for the people to make their position known on the “compromise.” In an impressive performance of feigned anger, President Obama signed the bill into law and rapidly retreated to his office to rejoice in his victory.

The “compromise” was not a compromise at all.

The Obama regime got the increase on their “credit card” limit IMMEDIATELY and the mechanism in place for future increases until after the 2012 election. Nice deal……for the Debtocrats!!! But wait, they got even more from the “compromise.”

The Debtocrats also won the establishment of a Joint Select Committee tasked with identifying $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS.

The Joint Select Committee has no chance of delivering on this assignment. Both the Democrats and Republicans will contribute mightily to gridlock and the mandated cuts in the Budget Control Act of 2011 will be implemented which enforce cuts in the Defense Department budget (the Democrats love that) and social programs which will cause widespread lamentations from the liberal left and the mainstream media. The Obama regime will seize upon this and loudly condemn the Republicans as the villains.

All this from a “compromise” that Senator Thune supported.

Senator Thune, we did not elect you or any other lawmaker in 2010 to compromise, but to change the way we do business in Washington. We elected you to courageously save our republic from fiscal implosion by enabling continued unrestrained federal spending. Allowing more debt NOW without real meaningful spending cuts NOW is unacceptable.

Once again the Obama and the Debtocrats created an artificial “impending event” …………..default of the US was not necessary on August 2nd. Once again the huge engine of big government was refueled by a “compromise.”
