Student’s Perspective On Homeschooling

This young teenager was asked to write a short summary about homeschooling.

Hi, my name is Edelia Waldrop and I was asked to write about what it’s like to be homeschooled. Most people probably think homeschoolers don’t work that hard because our parents don’t care. In some cases that may true but that’s not the mindset for most homeschooled families. My parents would have more time for other things if we went to public school and we would probably be better behaved for our teachers and not give them attitude! Also, another misconception people have is that parents homeschool their kids to shelter them and when they graduate and move out homeschoolers are shocked because of drugs, alcohol and other negative influences. This may be true in some ways but in my opinion, it’s far better for kids to be protected and sheltered than to be exposed to such terrible issues at young ages.

My brother and I weren’t always homeschooled. We began our education at public school for the first two and three years and then started homeschooling when I was beginning 3rd grade. “Why?” you may ask.  It’s because our parents didn’t want us influenced negatively and we came home each day with a lot of homework. They asked themselves, “What are the kids doing at school for seven hours a day when they come home and have to do another hour’s worth of school each night? Why are other people spending more time with our kids than we are?” Our family is closer together than if we all attended public school. We are more involved in church functions, 4-H Clubs, visiting friends & family, taking trips, playing games and doing projects and other activities far more than a lot of other families.

There are things about public or private school that are good – there are also difficulties with homeschooling. But each kid is different and each situation unique – each family has to make their own best decision based on their specific circumstances. My mom’s job gives her the flexibility to homeschool us and my dad’s job often allows him to be involved two days a week or more. I enjoy being homeschooled and am glad that it has worked well for my family to be homeschoolers!

With the failures of “No Child Left Behind”, and the new assault on education by “Common Core”, perhaps more families should consider homeschooling.

The decision to homeschool your child is a huge, life changing decision. A parent should consider all possible advantages and disadvantages before beginning schooling from their kitchen tabletop. Because of the strong feelings on both sides of the homeschooling debate, sometimes searching parents end up only consuming information from other homeschooling parents. These resources tend to be a bit skewed as they are written by parents that feel they need to defend their choices instead of giving accurate pros and cons to homeschooling. This site is for searching parents who have read articles and blogs entitled “Should You Homeschool Your Child” and found only positives about homeschooling. If there were negatives, they were quickly refuted as “myths” or “untruths” and turned into a positive. It is important to consider the student’s perspective as it is their life that will forever be changed by the decision to homeschool. While much of the material relates to the high school years, all students reach this age! Even if your child is in the elementary years, it is prudent to consider how your choice will affect them as they near graduation – and beyond. I am not trying to make your decision for you. I am just trying to give you information to help inform your choice.
