$ 100 Million Dollar Tax Increase In South Dakota

Taxes just aren’t high enough!

That is the consensus of a South Dakota Legislative committee.  They voted this month to support a 16 page bill that will increase your taxes in South Dakota by $100 Million dollars.  That’s just the FIRST year.  It goes up from there.  It might be interesting to note that only 3 of these committee members are Democrats, while 12 of them are Republicans.

The Chairman of the committee offers this comforting assessment, “We’re trying to hit so many different places that no one feels all the pain at once.”

That makes me feel much better about increasing gas tax nearly 35% (sarcasm).  The chairman also  wants you to know we are going to have a “crisis” if we don’t raise taxes by over $ 100 million dollars a year.

BUT, an increase in fuel tax isn’t the only increase.  The proposed legislation would also raise the excise tax on the purchase of a vehicle by about the same percentage.  The current tax on your purchase is 3%.  The new tax would be 4%.  Vehicle registration would also contribute $8.7 Million to the fund with an increase of  about 10%.

Farm diesel would “share the pain” by contributing over $ 9 million dollars in new tax revenue.

To be fair, three of the fifteen members on the committee voted against moving this bill forward.  Even so, those members may not be opposed to some kind of a tax increase.

There are many other creative ways this committee wants to  increase your taxes by moving this bill forward.

Isn’t it nice that these pesky  elections are over so South Dakota Republicans can get on with the work of raising our taxes?
