US Debt 18 Trillion And Climbing

Even before we ring in the new year, another record has been set.

18 trillion

There seems to be no end in sight.  The fear of being “blamed” for a government shutdown has Congress running scared.  “Government shutdown” is the new, politically correct term for fiscal responsibility.  Anyone who would dare to hold the line on spending and debt is no longer fiscally responsible, they are “shutting down the government”.  Isn’t it interesting how words are twisted in the political world?

Our Federal government will spend half a trillion dollars more than it takes in for 2014.  If we CUT spending by 1 Billion dollars it would still take us over 30 years to eliminate the current national debt.  There seems to be little appetite for that in D.C.

BUT…

lest you think all the overspending and debt is at the Federal level, you should take a moment to look at your own state finances on the debt clock.  South Dakota, the home of “conservatives” has an interesting financial profile:

sd debt

South Dakota spending $1.2 Billion more than the revenue?

South Dakota nearly $7 Billion in debt?

Nearly 100,000 food stamp recipients?  Does that mean if the average family is 3 people, that 1 of every three families receives food stamps in South Dakota?

Is South Dakota’s debt growing by the minute??

See for yourself…   www.usdebtclock.org/state-debt-clocks/state-of-south-dakota-debt-clock.html

It all gives rise to more questions than answers.

One thing seems certain; We will continue to go even farther into debt in the new year, with no obvious hope of changing course.
