Budget Busters

The House has solved the debt ceiling problem.

They simply REMOVED the debt ceiling, paving the way for UNLIMITED spending.  Everything Obama and the Democrats wanted through 2017.  It’s what the Republicans wanted too.  It moves the problem past the next election cycle.  One of the bad parts of the plan is to sell 58 million barrels of oil from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserves.  It also comes at the expense of increased Medicare premiums (over 50%), along with tax and policy “changes” (tax increases).

79 Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the bill (including the new Speaker-designate, Paul Ryan), while 167 Republicans voted against the deal.  You might say, “Good job” to the 167 who voted no.  HERE”S THE RUB… They were given the luxury of voting “no”, knowing that enough of their fellow Republicans were joining the Democrats to pass the deal, thus giving them political cover.  The “no” votes, in many cases were cast by those who have routinely supported increases to the debt ceiling and spending increases.  Now, they have “bragging rights” during the next election cycle.  It is how the political game is played.  Yes, there are some heroes, but not 167 of them.

Nancy Pelosi declared the deal a “major victory for bipartisanship and working families”.  John Boehner called it “fiscally responsible”.  Paul Ryan said it would help him “start with a clean slate”.  Can you see where the Congress is going??

Rep. Darrell Issa most accurately described the deal, “We’re robbing from the future to pay for today”.

The negotiations leading to this “deal” were held in secret.  The negative consequences of this Congressional irresponsibility will be seen for many years.  The Senate could still block the deal, but don’t count on that either.  There are a few fiscally sane Senators who will attempt to stop it, like Paul and Cruz, but they are outnumbered by “Republicans” who will vote with the Democrats to pass the deal.  The same political cover will be afforded to some Republicans so they can say they opposed the deal.  The sad truth is that they will have counted the votes so they are secure in the passage, even as they vote “no”.  It is the way the political game is played.

In the end, they have removed the limits on debt, increased spending and declare victory.  How nice.

It’s how the political game is played.
