The latest in a string of tax increases from the South Dakota “Republican” controlled political system.  It will remove $107 Million dollars per year from the pockets of taxpayers.

Here is the vote on HB 1182.abWe should be grateful for those Republicans in the minority who stood their ground and voted against this latest tax increase.

Now, it is on to the State Senate and the Governor’s desk.  Both appear ready to sign off on it.

When Republicans abandon their principles, where do conservative voters go?

It isn’t that teachers don’t do an important job. They do! That said, their pay is pretty much in line with the average salary in the State of South Dakota, for a job that receives far more vacation and perks than most jobs. We do need to make sure teachers are paid a fair wage. I’m not sure that taxing 100% of the State’s residents, and giving to those who are on par with their neighbors, is the answer. I applaud my own representative, Lance Russell for voting “Nay”. It takes guts to stand with a set of core values, and be opposed to the left wing media and teachers’ unions. Good job to those who voted no in an attempt to find other solutions.

While we are looking hard at those who voted for another BIG tax increase, lets not fail to look at the Republican Representatives who had the courage to vote “nay” with so much public pressure on them. They deserve credit for not caving in when others did. Let’s try not to throw all Republicans under the bus just because of what some of the did.

The voters go to the poles is where they go. I for one will seriously consider running for office in District 34 as all three of my representatives, Rep. Partridge, Rep. Dryden and Senator Tieszen are supporting HB1182. It is not a case of not agreeing that teachers may (in some cases – but not all) need raises. It is that not all of the revenue saving possibilities were ever discussed seriously by the Blue Ribbon Task Force.

In addition, having experience, albeit many years ago, the pay negotiations between board members of which I was one, leave me less than impressed with how union members treat their new/beginning teachers. I hope that the Senate Policy bills that will deal with this windfall does something about how this money is spread to the wide longevity range of teachers. I fear that beginning teachers, those who most need the increase, will be left behind once again.
