Republican Pledge Worthless

All the candidates stood on stage and agreed to support the nominee of the Party.

That was then.  This is now.

It was a desperate attempt by the Republican Party to create some sense of unity.  What they missed is that real unity will only come when leaders support and voters rally around the platform.  The Republican Party platform, both nationally and in South Dakota, is a good platform.  It represents what Republicans say they believe.  Especially when they are running for office.  Unfortunately, that is where it ends for many candidates.  Its also unfortunate that even many Republican Party officials are among those who don’t support the platform.

Now, Trump has declared his pledge null and void.  He doesn’t think he has been treated fairly.

So, the Republican Party leaders are in a dither because their pledge has proven to be worthless.  Actually, it was worthless from the beginning.  As per usual, they missed the point.  Party unity doesn’t come through a pledge to a person… or even a Party.  They needed to ask candidates to agree to a pledge which they won’t ask them to take.

Unity will be restored to the Republican Party when candidates (and Party leaders) take a pledge to support the PRINCIPLES of their own platform.

A pledge (accompanied by accountability) to a principled Party platform could restore unity in the Republican Party.
