It is encouraging to see another  committed CONSERVATIVE running for office!

This from Tim’s website:

Tim Goodwin is the Republican candidate for the South Dakota House of Representatives in District 30.

Tim embodies the story of an American patriot and exceptionalism, with 24 years of service to his country as a retired U.S. Army Officer. Tim is a take-charge type of person, which is how he began his military service at the young age of 18, by enlisting into the demanding 82nd Airborne division, where he earned the “Division’s Distinguished Trooper Award.” While serving within the 82nd Division, Tim began his college education and by 1980, he had obtained his commission as an officer in the U.S. Army. In 1983, while continuing his military career, he began his journey in life as a father with the birth of his first child. Over the next 17 years, Tim was awarded 48 different awards and medals, including the distinguished Douglas McArthur Leadership Award twice, to finally retire after earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Tim continued the American success story that is his life, with his wife Marcia by his side, he set out into the world of business as a sales person. For over 19 years, Tim has made his living as a businessman selling quality, American made products, recognized as a top salesman over 17 times in his career.

Tim has spent his life living the ideal of exceptionalism. With his wife Marcia at his side, Tim has instilled that value to his children and grandchildren.

-When retired military officers publicly enter the political fray through endorsements or other forms of involvement, they trigger several concerns that the military as an institution should not take lightly. The prospect of retired officers campaigning or holding office runs the risk of undermining the confidence that the public has in the military’s political neutrality.”
-Samuel Huntington has said, “Politics is beyond the scope of military competence, and the participation of retired military officers in politics undermines their professionalism, curtailing their professional competence, dividing the profession against itself, and substituting extraneous values for professional values.

Hey, Gordon! Can you and Tim flesh out for me what it means to spend one’s life “living the ideal of exceptionalism”?

Retired officers who achieve command positions have usually spent the great deal of their adult professional lives in the armed forces. They have incorporated the military’s culture into their lives and should be sensitive and responsive to disapproval levelled by colleagues with respect to their behaviour after retirement. While serving in the forces all soldiers have to remain apolitical and are not permitted to publicly endorse a candidate or party. It is also seen to be in poor form when retired officers of high rank attempt to use the position obtained to their advantage
