Protecting Sexual Predators

Former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert was sentenced to prison.

He got a whopping 15 month sentence.  After sexually abusing multiple young boys years ago, Hastert finally had a day of reckoning.  He will also have to pay a $250,000.00 fine and serve probation.  The Judge called him a “Serial child molester”.

How could he get such a light sentence?  Because of the statute of limitations, Hastert could only be charged with a financial crime related to the payments he was making to one of his sexual abuse victims.

Protecting sexual predators is one of the crimes against humanity perpetuated by politicians who make laws regarding statute of limitations.  The Hastert pedophilia protection is a classic example.

Lest you think this only happens in “other places”, you might be interested in South Dakota’s pedophilia protection plan.  It is part of the legacy of former Governor, now US Senator Mike Rounds, and other South Dakota Republican leaders.  House Bill 1104 (from the Legislative Session in 2010) says any abuse victims over the age of 40 can sue only the individuals who abused them and not churches, schools or other institutions with which an abuser was associated. It passed the House 52-14 and the Senate 26-7.

“Any civil action based on intentional conduct brought by any person for recovery of damages for injury suffered as a result of childhood sexual abuse shall be commenced within three years of the act alleged to have caused the injury or condition, or three years of the time the victim discovered or reasonably should have discovered that the injury or condition was caused by the act, whichever period expires later. However, no person who has reached the age of forty years may recover damages from any person or entity other than the person who perpetrated the actual act of sexual abuse.

I was one of only two Republicans in the South Dakota Senate to vote against this bill.  Governor Mike Rounds signed the bill into law.

Sexual predators and organizations who protect them should not be given a pass.
