Not Your Grandpa’s Longhorn

The Longhorns of “Rawhide” days are gone forever.

BUT…

… Most of the world doesn’t know it yet.  Even Wikipedia is stuck in the past.  This trusted source of information misreports some vital statistics on Texas Longhorn Cattle.  They report that “some” bulls have horns that measure as much as 70.8 inches Tip to Tip.  Longhorn producers are keenly aware that 70 inches is no longer competitive, with one bull over 100 inches and many more hot on his heels.

Wikipedia reports that “some” steers or “exceptional” cows can have horns that reach 82.8 inches.  Today’s Longhorns look much different than that. There are many steers measuring well over 100 inches, and plenty of cows pushing the 100 inch mark.

Wikipedia should include the Gallery of Horns website, which provides extensive information on Texas Longhorn cattle.

The nutritional value of Texas Longhorns is another little known reality.  Longhorn beef beats other meats on several nutritional levels.  This surprises most people.

The size and conformation of today’s Longhorn cattle is also surprising to those who haven’t followed the breed.  Dickinson Cattle Company has been one of the breeders who has significantly influenced the breed for BEEF as well as horn.

There is concern among Longhorn enthusiasts that the development of Tip to Tip horn measurement is being accomplished at the expense of the famous Longhorn twist horns.  While some long-horned Longhorns aren’t twisty, there are still plenty of breeders who love the twist, and who have animals that display long, twisty horns.

This video shows off a cow that has beautiful, classic, twisty horns.

Texas Longhorns… What’s not to love???
