It’s Fun Until Someone Loses An Eye

That old saying came to mind…

I enjoy being around my longhorns.

Each one is uniquely individual. Not just with color and horn, but also personality. Most of the time I am working with or around them I do it solo.

This week I needed to load a mature steer in my stock trailer and transport him. It was easy to get him in the corral. When the yearlings and the three adults in the calving pasture saw me with a bag of grain they all came running. When they were all in the corral, I sorted the steer into the loading pen.

The trailer was at the gate with the door open. Everything was ready for the steer to load. The trailer door was held against the corral fence with a piece of barbed wire about a foot long. I had just taken a wrap around the door handle and the corral fence to hold the door in place.

As I closed the loading pen, the steer walked on to the trailer. I gave the door a vigorous push to close it.   The barbed wire came loose with great force… quickly. In the process, the end of the wire smacked me square in the face, at the bottom of my left eye. My first reaction, when determining that I could still see, was to thank God for protecting my eye. On closer examination it was clear to determine that the wire had connected just a whisker below my eye. The mark it left will be a trophy for at least a few days. Had it hit me just a little higher it would have seriously damaged or destroyed my eye.

The rest of the trip was uneventful. My nephew, Rick joined me for the drive, after we had lunch with his sister, Annette (my niece). It was wonderful to deliver the steer rather than visit the hospital.

I am very grateful for the protection of God.
