Peter along with David Manual wrote a great book about the history of early America called “The Light and the Glory”, which shows God’s hand on our Establishment.

Christopher Columbus had been named after St. Christopher who was a giant 3rd Century pagan who wanted to know Christ and lived as a hermit by a fast moving stream that had no bridges so Christopher aided by his large staff would carry people across. Legand has it that one night St. Christopher was wakened by a small boy, asking to be carried across. Christopher put him on his shoulders with ease but as he went farther and farther into the current, the burden grew heavier, until it seemed like he was carrying the whole world on his back. It was all he could do to keep from going under. When he finally reached the far bank, he fell exhausted on the ground, gasping for breath. “Marvel not, Christopher” said his small passenger then, “for indeed you have borne the world and Him who created it. I am the Christ, whom you serve by doing good. As proof, plant your staff by your hut, and in the morning it will be covered with blossoms and fruit.” And it Was!

Christopher means Christ Bearer, and Columbus believed he was chosen by God to carry the Christian Faith to India, China and new lands; which he was convinced that he could do by sailing West. He claimed several prophecies as intended for him such as Isaiah 49:1 “Listen, O isles, unto me; and harken, ye people from afar; The Lord hath callled me from the womb.” and Isaiah 49:6 “I will give the for a Light to the Gentiles, that Thou may be my Salvation to the end of the Earth.”

Columbus wrote, “It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) the fact that it would be possiblle to sail from here o the Indies. And all who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.”

As the 500th Anniversary of the first Voyage of Columbus was approaching, Col. John Eidsmoe published a book in June 1992 called “Columbus and Cortez, Conquerors for Christ” for which Peter Marshall wrote the forward. Both these great books show God’s plan for America was to help advance His Salvation through Christ to the whole world. More about Columbus the missionary, Next time.
