Government and Christian Values

Voters will soon have an opportunity to choose a direction for their country.

Perhaps it may be more appropriate to say Christians will soon have an opportunity.

Christians will determine the direction of our country in two ways:

By voting, and by NOT voting!  Either way, they are choosing.  So how will they choose?  If they adhere to the tenants of the faith to which they claim to hold, we will take a course toward righteousness.  If not, then America is indeed either lost or in grave danger of being lost.

But it is not just the Presidential election that will guide our nation into the future.  State and local elections may be even more important in many ways.

It’s unfortunate, but voters can’t judge candidates by what they SAY.  We must look deeper, and examine what they have DONE.  Their voting records and/or their behavior is the basis on which Christians should determine who is deserving of their vote.  It is also unfortunate that many Christians do not look deep enough to be accurately informed.  They are willing to accept less… much less than righteous rule.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS, a Civil Rights Leader and minister expressed my political sentiments, and what should be the politics of all believing Christians:  “I have one great political idea. . . . It is in substance, “Righteousness exalteth a nation; sin is a reproach to any people.[Proverbs 14:34]. . . . this constitutes my politics – the negative and positive of my politics, and the whole of my politics.”

George Washington provided some excellent advise to Christian voters as well, when he said, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

David Barton says that people of faith should elect leaders who will not only protect and expand the opportunity for the public acknowledgment of God but who will also apply His principles to public venues.  In 2008, he produced a guide to help Christian voters determine how to “vote Christian values”.  He recently made it available again.  It is worth taking the time to read it before you cast your next vote.
