Support Is Growing For Public Prayer

Last month, Mississippi took a big step forward in restoring prayer in schools.

Governor Phil Bryant signed a law which will take effect in July, requiring schools to develop a policy allowing public and open prayer.  The bill stops short of school-sponsored prayer, but makes it clear that prayer may be part of a school day or activity.

David Silverman, President of American Atheists objected, “This is an overt act of hostility against minority religious beliefs and atheists, disguised as religious freedom,” said “This is not religious freedom; it’s open and proud bigotry, and the people of Mississippi should be ashamed of their legislature and governor.”

Their official objection alone should be enough evidence to tell America this was the right thing for Mississippi Legislators and their Governor to do.

Other states are beginning to take a stand to defend the American tradition of prayer in public.  State Senator Bill Stanley introduced an amendment in Virginia this year to allow public prayer.    Last year voters in Missouri approved a constitutional amendment that gives residents the right to “pray and acknowledge God voluntarily in their schools.”  Florida approved a bill to allow students to read inspirational messages at assemblies and sporting events. South Carolina this year introduced legislation that would allow for prayer during a mandatory minute of silence at the start of the school day, provided that students who do not want to hear the prayer can leave the classroom.

What is your state doing?

South Dakota is a state which has the motto “Under God the people rule”.  Still, no legislation has been passed to restore prayer in schools.

Tell Governor Daugaard to support school prayer.

Dennis Daugaard (R-SD)

Call Governor Dennis Daugaard and South Dakota Legislators and tell them to take action on this important issue.

Put prayer back in the classroom!
