Knowing God

A message of hope, inspiration and challenge.

America’s only hope for restoration is for the hearts of men, women and children to turn their hearts toward God. This Sunday message is one that is good for every day of the week.

“Knowing God and making Him known” is the highest priority of my life. To the degree that I have been faithful to that vision, I have been blessed.   Obviously God is far too big for me or anyone to know completely. We, as Christians, will spend eternity knowing Him and never complete the task.

The Bible describes eternal life as “knowing God.  Jesus said, in John 17:3, “This is eternal life that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.”  In John 5:24 He said, “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life.”  Eternal life, that of knowing God, is something we can experience now in the present tense.

The word “know” refers to a personal and intimate relationship with Him.

It is not the same as knowing about Him.  In John 5:39-40 Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and these are they which testify of Me, but your are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.”  Coming to Jesus is to surrender our life fully to Him.

Knowing God is the fulfillment of His promise in Jeremiah 31:31-34, “The days are coming says the Lord when I will make a New covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah. . . . I will be their God and they shall be My people. . . . For they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.”  This Covenant differentiates the Old from the New Testament.

In John 10:27 Jesus said,  “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow Me.”  The Apostle Peter began his second Epistle explaining that all things pertaining to life and holiness come through the knowledge of God.  In II Corinthians 3:18, Paul illustrates how we are transformed or changed into God’s image as we behold Him.  Knowing Him we are changed.

The Christian life is an ongoing discovery of who He is, and a surrendering to His Lordship. We need to spend quality time with Him.  The Bible says, “Be still and know that I am God.”  Deuteronomy 4:29, “You will find Him when you seek Him with all your heart.”

We grow in faith and trust of God as we read Scripture, pray, fellowship with believers who know Him, and share our life and testimony with others.

The starting point is to know Him as our Savior who forgives us our sin. The more we encounter of God’s love the more we love Him.  There is no higher calling, than knowing Him!

The speech and actions of Jesus — not merely words on a page, but a Person; not just any person but God become flesh; not just any god but the One who is in the bosom of the Father (“God from God, light from light, true God from true God”) — are the highest expression of the nature of God ever disclosed to men and women.
