Negative Campaigning

Negative campaigning isn’t anything new.

What might be new…er, is the assertion that a candidate who talks about the actual voting records of other candidates is a “negative” campaigner.web.ad03silhouette

This assertion is most frequently made by those who don’t like their actual voting records to be publicized.  In Republican primaries, there seems to be a contest to see who can create the public perception of being the most conservative candidate.  Regardless of how the candidate has performed in office, the “conservative” brand is still important to voting Republicans.

Unfortunately, the “conservative” brand has been compromised.  Genuine conservatives are dismissed as “wacko-birds” and extremists by those who are, themselves, liberal-minded “Republicans” pretending to be conservative.

Sometimes the battle can get pretty nasty.

In a recent contest for Governor in South Dakota, two candidates went “negative”, while one liberal-minded Republican just stood by and watched.  It enabled him to become what some have called the “Accidental” Governor.  M. Michael Rounds is now  running for US Senate, after serving two terms as a conservative (just kidding) Governor.

Negative campaigning can cause some unintended consequences.

Pointing out an elected legislators voting record is never negative as long as it is based on actual votes . Legislators should welcome the chance to explain their voting record .
