Congress Concerned About Common Core

Parents across America are very concerned about Common Core.

So are many members of Congress. Congressman Jeff Duncan has introduced a resolution condemning Common Core. A host of other members of Congress have signed on to support it as well.

Despite the concern of many parents and educators, 45 states have adopted Common Core standards. Many people are suggesting that it is more about the money than it is about education. In exchange for accepting and adopting Federal dictates on educational standards, the States web.ad97jeepreceive money from the Federal government, or preference in grants and other funds.

The practice of social engineering with Federal dollars is certainly nothing new. Those who have been watching closely, however, are alarmed that the Federal government has managed to buy the States approval of the government takeover of education with tax dollars.

One of the significant objections raised in this resolution condemning Common Core comes from the Constitution:

“… the 10th amendment of the Constitution of the United States reads, `The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people’; and

Whereas, throughout the course of United States history, States have maintained the responsibility of education based on the 10th amendment because the explicit power of educating children was not delegated to the United States by the Constitution.”

Congressman Duncan makes two additional salient points in his resolution:

“States and local educational agencies should maintain the right and responsibility of determining educational curricula, programs of instruction, and assessments for elementary and secondary education

the Federal Government should not incentivize the adoption of common education standards or the creation of a national assessment to align with such standards”

You should write your representative in Congress and urge them to support this resolution.

In South Dakota, Governor Dennis Daugaard is a strong supporter of Common Core.

Tell him what YOU think about his support for this Federal dictate.

Congresswoman Kristi Noem is NOT one of the co-sponsors of this resolution. Encourage her to support it!
