Stand Still!

There are a number of times in the bible, when God tells his people to stand still and see the salvation of God.

This usually happens when circumstances reach a certain stage, and where people cannot find an answer to their problems. This is different to people who spend too long in a trial. When God calls people to stand still, until he deals with a situation, the period of standing still is usually only for a short period of time.

There a three specific examples in the bible, where God told his people to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. The first example was in Exodus 14:13 (NIV), when Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.” The circumstances surrounding this statement were so bad, that the Children of Israel could not find a way of escape from the beach. They needed a miracle, if they were not tonew ad be defeated by the Egyptians. In the second example, Samuel spoke to Israel in 1 Samuel 12:16 (NIV) when he said, “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes!”

In this instance, the Children of Israel wanted a King to rule over them, like other nations. Samuel tried to warn them that this was not a good idea, and asked God to send thunder and rain, so that the people might fear God. Even so, God was with the Children of Israel, and through this kingly line, Jesus was born and brought deliverance to the whole world. The third and final example of standing still referred to Jehoshaphat’s circumstances when Moab, Ammon and the Ammonites came against him to do battle. After Jehoshaphat humbled himself and prayed with all of Judah, the Spirit of God came on Jahaziel in 2 Chronicles 20:14-17 (KJV). Jahaziel said, ‘ “You shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you. And, therefore, God defeated the enemies of Judah.’

There are times in your life where you will need to stand still before God, and let him fight your battles for you. The objective of such circumstances teaches you that God is bigger than you are, and bigger than your circumstances. He permits you to experience difficult times, so that you might learn to relay on him, and not on yourself.

Today may be one of those days, when you need to stand still and see the salvation of God in your life!
