B-52 “Diplomacy” Forced North Vietnam to Negotiate in 1972

nupen-front-leftOn Saturday, August 9, Major Curt Nupen (USAF ret) of Piedmont will offer a PowerPoint presentation about his experiences as an Electronic Warfare Officer in B-52s in the Vietnam War’s Operation Linebacker II.  Sponsored by the Black Hills Veterans Writing Group, the event will take place at the Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, 9-11 am.

     The Christmas Bombings of targets like Hanoi and Haiphong from December 18-29, 1972, were part of President Nixon’s  strategy to force North Vietnam to the negotiating table.  In the audience will be other B-52 crew members from Vietnam, including CPT Kim Morey and nupenCMSGT Richard Lake.

     His experience in Vietnam also included the KC-135 Stratotanker.  Since retirement in the Black Hills, he has served three terms on the Meade School District Board (and is current member) and four terms on the Meade County Commission.  He is also Commander of American Legion Post 311 in Piedmont.

    Is the guy standing on far right tail gunner Msgt Orvin Carter. If so he is my father, would like to know tail number of B52
