What the Republicans seem to fear most is a government shutdown. One article that gives a preview appeared on the Politico web site, titled
“GOP leaders uniting around plan to avoid shutdown”
A few excerpts from the article precede my thoughts…
Republican leaders have struggled to come up with a plan that would satisfy both goals — of keeping the government open, while allowing members to express their anger at Obama.
Here is a news flash… expressing anger does not DO anything. Keeping government open (the primary objective) is code for “We will compromise on what is best for America so that Republicans don’t get blamed for a shutdown”. Wouldn’t a better strategy be to insist on fiscal responsibility? Why not, CUT spending, REDUCE debt and STOP government growth?
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has signaled he would hold up some of Obama’s executive branch nominees, others privately have been musing about shutting the government down, refusing to invite the president to give his State of the Union address or censuring the president. Many in congressional leadership think these ideas are nonsensical, since it will not serve any practical purpose.
Whether you agree with Cruz or not, at least he is suggesting some form of ACTION, rather than simply allowing Congress to vent their anger.
Jockeying for the presidential election will begin in the second half of 2015.
Ah, yes… now we get to the real objective. It’s about saving the PARTY. We return now (actually never left) to the philosophy of political expedience. We must compromise our principles and NOT do what is best for America now, so we will be in a position to do what is good for America later.
I am still hoping… praying that Republicans will unite around principle and do what is right… NOW, regardless of the political consequences.
