Tolerating Racial Hatred In Rapid City, South Dakota

Hate is an ugly thing.

Racially motivated hate is an unacceptable blight on humanity.

Perhaps even worse, though, are those who tolerate it.  Such appears to be the case at a recent hockey game in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Students and staff from the American Horse School were reportedly subjected to assault and verbal abuse.  Local media reports say, ” people in the suite (located above the children and staff) began verbally harassing the students and throwing beer on some of the students and staff. A teacher rounded up the student group, and they left out of fear for their safety.”

The question in my mind is this: Why didn’t other people seated in the area simply put a stop to this abuse and compel the perpetrators to leave instead?  The reported abuse is certainly bad, but from my perspective, the inaction of bystanders is even worse.  How can anyone stand (or sit) idly by and do nothing?

Have we become so wicked as a society that we will no longer rise up in righteous anger when we see hatred and injustice?

I think so.

In America (and, yes, in South Dakota) we stand quietly by as unborn children are killed every day.  It shouldn’t surprise us when people do nothing to defend a group of Native children and their teachers being assaulted and verbally abused.  It should, however, disappoint us.  Aren’t we better than that?  Can’t we BE better than that?

Rise up Samaritans.  Lead our State and Nation back to the foot of the cross.
