News That Isn’t News

Reporters of the news have now BECOME the news.

That’s not necessarily good for the daily dispensation of the truth.

Since the advent of 24 hour news, there is a mad scramble to fill every minute, every hour, every day with “news”.

The constant barrage of “news” has taken media away from the (accurate) reporting of news and information.  Hard news isn’t enough any more.  Celebrity “reporters” have become “opinion providers” and propaganda machines.  If that were not enough, they have developed the art of “manufacturing” the news and “fabricating” the news.  Generally, that is ok with most viewers.  Of late, however, some celebrity “newscasters” have crossed the line and may have reached their day of reckoning.longhorn internet ad

“Some of what people have described as his racist tendencies towards Iraqis and Muslims when he was going on some of these, you know, killing sprees in Iraq on assignment.”  REALLY??  that’s news?  It seems to be, according to NBC reporter Ayman Mohyeldin (referring to American sniper Chris Kyle).

Even more infamous, is NBC’s Brian Williams who misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003. It has also become clear that on other occasions Brian did the same while telling that story in other venues.

Even “fair and balanced” Fox News seems to major on celebrity opinion from news anchors and reporters.  Thankfully, there is still time for SOME hard news.  The new challenge is for viewers to sort through it all to determine what is true, what is fact, what is opinion and what is fiction.

But then, why should we expect more from our news providers than we do from politicians?
