Horn Is Important

Horn sets the bar for Texas Longhorn cattle.

It’s why we just purchased the “Mystery Cow”.hornStay tuned to find out WHO the “Mystery Cow” is.  For today, let’s talk about the importance of HORN.

This cow not only has 83″ of tip-to-tip horn, she has nearly 100″ of total horn.  In the battle for the longest tip-to-tip horn, some longhorn breeders have disregarded TOTAL horn.  They want ALL the horn to protrude straight out, to get the longest tip-to-tip measurement.  I won’t be highly critical of that, but personally, I still like horn with some character.  It’s one of the HCR adreasons I fell in love with the “Mystery Cow”.  Her strong tip-to-tip measurement does not come at the expense of the more traditional longhorn horn configuration.

Developing the best set of horns isn’t possible without “total” horn.  When I first saw Wyoming Warpaint, I knew he was significant to the breed, even though his strength was total horn rather than tip-to-tip.  Sharing ownership of Warpaint with JBR Longhorns gave me the opportunity to see up close how important it is to start with total horn length.  Combining an animal with exceptional total horn length with a “flat-horned” animal can produce some exciting results.

I will keep you posted on the “Mystery Cow”.  In the next week or so, I hope to show you the “whole picture.”

You’ll be impressed!!
