Maybe it’s time for a change.
When leaders were chosen in Old Testament days, it was done differently. King David comes to mind.
He was dismissed, even by his father. He was the least likely of all the “candidates” when the prophet Samuel came to the house of Jesse to interview his sons. He wasn’t even considered. There were eight sons, seven of whom were presented by Jesse to Samuel for consideration. None of them were chosen, even though they seemed to be the most likely. Samuel had clear instructions about the way he was to find the next King.
the Lord said to Samuel, “ For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Jesse must have been puzzled as his handsome, strong and capable sons were rejected, one by one. Only then was David summoned to appear before the prophet. God clearly told Samuel, “this is the one.” He was chosen by God because of what was in his heart. He certainly wasn’t perfect, but had a “heart after God”. Even with his human imperfections, he was a great King.
Maybe it is time for America to use a different measure to chose leaders. Maybe we should ask God who He would prefer. No, America doesn’t need a King. We do, however, need a leader with a “heart after God”.
America should let God chose her leaders.
