Relationship With God

Deep down, you probably believe there is a God.

If not, then please explain the intricacies of your own body, not to mention the universe.

But how do you live in a way that allows you to be continually aware that God is with you, for you and loves you?

I heard a story about one person who wears a vibrating wrist band that is set to go off every ten minutes.  It is their reminder to be “God-conscious” as they go through their day.  That would certainly revolutionize life for most of us, who go through the day without even thinking about God.

Moses knew it was vital that Israel kept God at the forefront of their minds.  It is why he gave them this exhortation:

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.  Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Jews also use certain rituals on a daily basis. They include putting on the tallit (prayer shawl) and tefillin (phylacteries which are two small leather boxes containing verses from the Bible that remind Jews of their duties — one worn on the forehead and one on the arm) and praying three times a day.

Many people spend their lives ignoring God.  Most Christians seem to live a life apart from God.  They might think of Him while they are in church on Sunday (if they go), but spend most of their time without a thought of Him.  Shouldn’t we change that, if we are really “Christian”?  Maybe there are some rituals, practices or habits that you could initiate to change your God-consciousness.  What would your life look like if you were reminded every ten minutes to reflect on God?  What if you prayed three times every day? What if you wore a wrist band or a ring to remind yourself to thank God.  What if you read or listened to Scripture every day?

Your life would be different.

Gordon, thanks for the reminder. I struggle with making God the center of my life daily. Sure, I pray first thing in the morning, at meals and when my children go to bed, but not when making decisions or “doing things”. A wonderful Christian friend of mine comes over and coaches my son in wrestling every once in a while. He prays before he begins and after he ends. I aspire to be as conscious of God as is he. Thanks again.
