Yes.
The real questions is, WHICH value voters will prevail.
Among those who claim to be “value voters”, many seem to wilt quickly when circumstances don’t line up the way they want them too. In reality, talk is cheap. The term, “value voters” originally referred to those who are conservative Christians who understood those values and voted accordingly. The term may have been co-opted, like “Republican”. This Presidential election, unlike any other, will determine whether value voters really mean business.
Many “value voters” have historically jumped ship in South Dakota elections, choosing to support candidates who could “win”. The result has been the election of people who clearly do not represent the core values of conservative Christians. Some value voters helped elect candidates who “represented” their values, and have been sorely disappointed to see those candidates abandon those values after winning elections.
Still, there are a few candidates who genuinely represent conservative Christian values. It’s not hard to find them. They are the ones the media likes to trash. They are the ones the Republican establishment “hates” and fears. Voters who are serious about their values will be supporting these candidates. “Value voters” who are weak in the knees will not. Iowa and New Hampshire will give us the first real test of just how committed to values these voters really are.
At the end of the day, the term “value voters” hangs in the balance. Will it continue to MEAN something, or will it become just another compromised term that means little or nothing? When you get to the bottom line, voters always express their values.
It just depends on which “values” they value.
