Annette Bosworth: Proposal To End Addiction On The Reservation

Addiction is one of the biggest problems on South Dakota Reservations.

Dr. Annette Bosworth has a passion to promote addiction recovery.

Oglala Sioux Tribe Attorney General Tatewin Means has joined forces with Dr. Bosworth to bring a bold, evidence-based solution to the addicted people of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.  An injection of Vivitrol has proven to be highly effective in overcoming addiction.  It works regardless of the addicts drug of choice (FDA approval for Alcohol and Opiates).  Several other substances are being studied.

The effect of the injection is to allow the addict a life free from addiction.  The compulsion to use is GONE.  That could literally empty the overcrowded jail cells across the State of South Dakota.  The percentage of drug/alcohol related crime has reached epidemic proportions, clogging the court system and filling jail cells.  It also empties the pockets of taxpayers.  The cost to South Dakota taxpayers has to be in the hundreds of millions.  This treatment could revolutionize life on and off the reservations.

Lives restored.

Millions of tax dollars saved.

So, who would resist such a promising solution?  Maybe organizations and individuals who make LOTS of money from the “addiction industry”.  Maybe too, the politicians who are the recipients of big, fat contributions from those organizations and individuals.

It will be interesting to see who wins this battle.
