Meet Post Hole

She has earned the title.

Post hole

I check the cows numerous times each day during calving season.

A few days ago I saw one of my favorite cows, Frostbite, off by herself.  That’s a sure sign that a calf has either arrived or is on the way.  As I approached her, it was obvious that she had delivered a calf… but no calf to be found.  The more I looked, the more puzzling it became.  All she wanted to do was sniff a small patch of dirt.  I decided to investigate more closely.

The patch of dirt turned out to be from a posthole that had been dug and then abandoned without filling it in.  As I looked into the hole, a small brown head looked back at me.  The calf had been cleaned by her mother and fallen backwards into the hole while nursing.  It was a good thing I found her or she would surely have died.  She was easy to extract from the hole, albeit a bit shaken from the whole experience.

She is now up and healthy, enjoying the sunshine today.

Post Hole might be my new favorite.

In the wake of all the political happenings, this was such a fun and happy story! The political stuff is good, too, but we all love a good story with a happy ending…and politically it is looking sorta grim on that front. 🙂 Thanks for the story of “Post Hole!” My grandpa was a farmer (my grandpa also happens to be House Rep, Lana Greenfield’s, dad, Gerald Dede–but I digress)….I loved checking the cows with him! I often wonder if my son & daughter will ever have the opportunity to experience farm life as I was able to when I was a kid. Some of my favorite memories from growing up were with grandpa on the farm…the smell of freshly cut hay mixed with manuer has to be one of my favorite smells in the whole wide world. Blessings, Laci (Greenfield)Sosa
