Thune and Rounds, “Draft Women”

If you think women should be forced to register for the draft, Senators Thune and Rounds are your guys.

Senator Ted Cruz was among only six Republican Senators (Cruz, Lee, Paul, Sasse, Crappo, Risch) to vote against the bill to draft women.  Only three Republican Senators (Cruz, Lee and Paul) held the line and voted against cloture on the bill.  Senator Cruz had this to say about the bill, and the lack of debate, “It is a radical change that is attempting to be foisted on the American people. The idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat, to my mind, makes little or no sense. It is at a minimum a radical proposition. I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly that did so without public debate.”

Senators Lee and Cruz offered an amendment which would have stripped the requirement that women must register for the draft, but that amendment never saw the light of day.

The Republican vote, 48-6, reflects just how far the party has drifted.  The minority of conservatives in the US Senate is similar to the balance (or imbalance) of power in the South Dakota State Senate.  When I served there, you could only count on 4-6 truly conservative votes.

It hasn’t been that long ago when even the thought of forcing 18 year old women to sign up for the military draft would have been absolutely and completely unacceptable.  It has now become (apparently) mainstream Republican doctrine.  Certainly, South Dakota Senators Thune and Rounds are in lock step with forced military draft registration for women.

Is that really the direction YOU think we should be going?

I cannot agree drafting women because of pure science. The DNA doesn’t allow the strength a females muscles to develop as in a man’s. There is NO woman who does as many “man” things as I do on a regular basis…I have poured concrete, jack hammered concrete, torn down walls, put up walls, torn up floor, put down floors, torn out electrical systems, put in electrical systems, sledge hammered cast iron tubs, replaced cast iron tubs…you name it and i have done it or will try it. WHICH IS WHY I KNOW A WOMAN IS NOT AS STRONG AS A MAN. I cannot rely on brute strength, like my husband and must use more finesse. Women in military YES!!! but not drafted to the front lines.

I personally believe that EVERY medically capable young person should have a mandatory two year service that could take many different forms, but preferentially gets them into third world situations. That service could include big city slums as well as some of the tragic areas in several of our Native American reservations. When they are lucky, millions of people in other countries live in buildings that we would consider poor quality chicken coops; a stint in such a location could help those desperately poor communities as well as give some much needed perspective to our very privileged youth.

Boy, I’m sure glad we elected Thune and Rounds to protect us from the Leftist agenda.
