Mitt Romney vs John Thune

Donald Trump has helped reveal the political character of some politicians.

First, let’s agree that Trump’s comments were disgusting and indefensible.  But, this isn’t a discussion about Trump.  It’s about the revealed character of others.

Mitt Romney had the political courage to stand before the nation and remain true to his convictions when he said he could not support Donald Trump.  Whether you agree with him or not, it took significant courage to face the abuse he was subjected to for remaining true to his conscience.  For that, he earned my respect.

South Dakota Senator John Thune has now called on Trump to “Withdraw from the race”.  It hasn’t been that long ago that Thune “endorsed” Trump.  You might wonder what has changed.  As far as Trump’s personal character and history of vulgarity… nothing.  So why now the indignation from Senator Thune over the Trump vulgarity?  It has become politically expedient to “disavow and un-endorse”.

Senator Thune and others who are now running for political cover should be called out for their own indiscretion.  That indiscretion has a name.  It is called “political expedience”.  In days past, it was called “covering your own butt”.  It’s just the latest example of politicians putting personal political gain above principle.  Not something that I find worthy of respect.

On the lighter side, my brother Gary had a suggestion on how Trump should handle the issue.  Trump should simply say,

“It’s too bad my comments were not in Hillary’s emails.  Then no one would have ever known what I said.”
